Where You’ll Add Value
We are seeking a highly motivated Summer Student (Intern) with a strong interest in advanced Excel and data automation to support the modernization of legacy Excel files. This position lasts up to six months and sits within the Reporting & Analytics. The primary focus is upgrading older Excel workbooks to Microsoft Excel 365, with the aim of improving scalability, usability, and performance while ensuring that existing business logic is maintained. This opportunity is ideal for a student who enjoys problem-solving, structured data work, and process improvement.
How You’ll Make a Difference
Excel Modernization & Optimization
Review and rework legacy Excel files that utilize older Excel functionality, such as Excel 2003 formulas.
Replace outdated or hard-coded formulas with modern Excel 365 functions and more user-friendly approaches.
Enhance file scalability, transparency, and maintainability, while ensuring that business outcomes remain unchanged.
VBA Review & Cleanup
Read, understand, and refactor existing Excel VBA macros.
Clean and optimize macro code while preserving the original intent and output.
Identify opportunities to reduce reliance on VBA by utilizing Excel 365 features or Power Query when appropriate.
Power Query & Data Structuring
Use Power Query and Excel Tables to streamline data sourcing and transformation processes.
Contribute to standardizing data structures across files to minimize redundancy and errors.
File Documentation & Dependency Tracking
Document all changes made to files, including updates to formulas and structural modifications.
Identify and track links between files, including dependencies that span across folders.
Assist in identifying primary keys and connection logic used by formulas to improve consistency and uniformity.
Exposure to Data Systems & Validation
Gain practical experience with systems such as Yardi, Yardi Data Connector (YDC), and SQL Server for data validation and sourcing.
Support basic validation of Excel outputs by comparing results with system-generated data.
Obtain exposure to Power BI for reporting and data modeling
Use of AI & Productivity Tools - effectively leverage AI tools, such as Copilot, to assist with formula conversion, code review, documentation, and efficiency improvements
The Expertise You’ll Bring
Current enrollment in a post-secondary program related to Computer Science, Data Analytics, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, or a similar field.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas.
Ability to understand and analyze existing spreadsheets and the logic behind them.
Comfortable working independently, demonstrating a high level of attention to detail.
Strong documentation and organizational skills.
Core Competencies
Current enrollment in a post-secondary program related to Computer Science, Data Analytics, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, or a similar field.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas.
Ability to understand and analyze existing spreadsheets and the logic behind them.
Comfortable working independently, demonstrating a high level of attention to detail.
Strong documentation and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Experience or exposure to Excel VBA, with the ability to read and interpret macros.
Familiarity with Power Query and Excel Tables.
Basic understanding of databases, SQL, or relational data concepts.
Exposure to Power BI.
Familiarity with Yardi or similar ERP systems is considered an asset.
Demonstrated ability to use AI tools productively for analysis and development.
